Autonomy, Literacy & Autism Assessments can work together to build robust self-knowledge.
This is for assessors, for people being assessed and anyone interested in learning more about Autism testing.
Autism tests are designed to build and contribute to an individual and collective literacy of autism. A strong reliance on tools, technologies, clinical frameworks and formulas is a sign of the test being autism illiterate. Autonomy is the key to keeping autism assessments literacy-generating and producing self-knowledge.
No matter the pathway to an autism test, and no matter the age of the person being assessed, self-knowledge is the core motivation and core component of the testing process and the conclusions of the test.
Autonomy must be present for this self-knowledge to arise within every step of the assessment. People being assessed and assessors who remain aware of this will increase the opportunities for autonomy and self-knowledge to be integral to the test.
While honoring the ethics and integrity of the assessment tools, people being assessed must be encouraged to share what they need to, how they need to and when they need to.
TIPS FOR KEEPING AUTISM ASSESSMENT DRIVEN FOR
AUTONOMY, LITERACY, & SELF KNOWLEDGE:
CONSULTATIONS may be done via Zoom and not only on the phone.
CLIENT CAN CONTACT THE ASSESSOR after the testing portion to add information.
Assessors need to know how to GO OFF SCRIPT AND BE GUIDED by the person being assessed.
DEBRIEFING SESSION to go over the report together.
Offer INFORMAL ASSESSMENTS for those who do not want a written report due to a variety of reasons.
Consider the TESTING ENVIRONMENT and ensure that ACCOMMODATIONS are honored. This may means breaking up the test into multiple sessions.
If you plan on getting an autism assessment, consider how autonomy and your own literacy of autism need to be honored. Be assertive in getting these needs met. It’s your test.
If you are an assessor, cultivate a consciousness that centralizes autonomy and literacy-generating tests that support the highest standard so that client can get the self-knowledge they desire.
